Hill College presents the Visual and Performing Arts Student Showcase on May 2, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at the Vara Martin Daniel Performing Arts Center. This year’s performance features a digital display of works of art from students in the Art Program, two one-act plays directed by two sophomore theatre majors, the Hill College Brass Ensemble, and a showcase of instrumental and vocal pieces by six music majors.

Artworks that will be on display were created by Briana Contreras, Isabella Garcia, Kylie Keller, and Harley Miller.

The two one-act plays are directed by sophomore theatre majors Hannah Roznowski and Devin Wilson. Roznowski will direct Roots & Wings by Terry Roueche featuring student actors Blake Welch and Alicia Hernandez. Wilson will direct Sure Thing by David Ives featuring student actors Michael Kaegael and Ariel Hancock.*

After the plays and a short intermission, the Music Program will take the stage with the brass ensemble, four instrumentalists, and four vocalists.

The brass ensemble will perform “Canzona per sonare No. 4” from Canzoni per sonare con ogni sorte stromenti, Venice, 1608, by Giovanni Gabrieli/ed. Robert King. The ensemble features Joseph Davis on the French horn, Taylor Gore on the trumpet, Bruce Morrow on the baritone horn, and Alan Ortiz on the trumpet.

Following the brass ensemble will be vocalists Christian Fesler, Holly Derbidge, and Zachary Belcher. Fesler (bass-baritone) will perform “Go the Distance” from Hercules by Alan Menken. Derbidge (soprano) will perform “Home” from Beauty and the Beast, music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman. Belcher (tenor) will perform “La donna é mobile” from Rigolette by Giuseppe Verdi. Belcher and Derbidge will perform the duet “Come What May” from Moulin Rouge! by David Baerwald and Kevin Gilbert.

Following the vocalists will be instrumentalists Taylor Gore, Joseph Davis, and Alexis Golleher. Gore (trumpet) will perform Allegro for Bb Trumpet and Piano by Antonio Vivaldi/trans. R. Bernard Fitzgerald. Davis (French horn) will perform I Attempt from Love’s Sickness to Fly by Henry Purcell/arr. Mason Jones. Golleher (vibraphone) will perform A Vision in a Dream by Tim Huesgen.

“The Student Showcase is a great night celebrating our students and their achievements not only over the course of the spring semester, but also over the course of their time with us at Hill College. It’s one of my favorite nights of the year because we are showing off just how fantastic our students are and all the skills they have learned and are employing in preparing, rehearsing, and performing,” said Dr. Jenny Corder, professor of drama.

*Roots & Wings is produced by arrangement with Off the Wall Play Publishers. Sure Thing is produced by arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. There are some mature themes in these plays; they may not be suitable for all audiences.
